What is Endodontics?
Endodontics is the branch of dentistry concerned with the morphology, physiology and pathology of the human dental pulp, tooth root, its surrounding soft tissues and bone. Root canal therapy is the most common endodontic procedure.

What is Endodontic Treatment?
Within the core of each tooth lies a chamber. This chamber contains the dental pulp, a soft-tissue structure made up of nerves and blood vessels. This structure sits within the chamber of the tooth and extends down the roots to its tips, where it exits into bone. The dental pulp is responsible for tooth and root growth.

Endodontic treatment, commonly called root canal treatment, is a dental procedure that removes damaged tissue from inside the roots of a tooth, significantly lengthening the life of the tooth. If the pulp or surrounding soft-tissue structures become diseased from decay, trauma or infection, the damaged pulp needs to be removed from the chamber and roots of the tooth. Endodontic treatment restores once-damaged teeth and is a recognized superior alternative to tooth extraction as a means of treating damaged interior structures such as the pulp.

Who is an Endodontist?
An endodontist is a dentist with special training in diagnosing and treating problems associated with the inside of the tooth and its surrounding supporting structures. They do only endodontic procedures because they are specialists. Endodontists complete four years of dental school and an additional two or more years of advanced training in endodontics.

Endodontists perform routine, difficult and complex endodontic procedures, including retreatment of previous root canals that have not healed completely and endodontic surgery. Endodontists also handle oral trauma, cracked or displaced teeth and dental emergencies where there is pain and facial/oral swelling. Endodontists are experienced at finding the cause of oral and facial pain that has been difficult to diagnose. We routinely take continuing education to stay abreast of state-of-the-art technology, clinical procedures and recent research.
